Abdullah Mason gets the chance to prove the hype is justified on Saturday.
The unbeaten 21-year-old takes on Sam Noakes for the vacant WBO lightweight title as part of the excellent Ring IV: Night of Champions card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, live on DAZN PPV this weekend.
America is crying out for their next superstar in boxing and they may just have one on their hands in the shape of Mason.
Not only has Mason (19-0, 17 KOs) developed a reputation as a fearsome knockout artist, but he is also regarded as one of the hottest prospects in world boxing and he can justify that reputation by capturing a world title against Noakes.
The belt was stripped from fellow American Keyshawn Davis and victory for Mason would make him the youngest male world champion, displacing 23-year-old super lightweight belt holder Xander Zayas.

Mason has never been beyond six rounds and Saturday’s contest will be his first scheduled 12-rounder, but that may not matter too much given how he has been getting rid of opponents and he is a heavy favourite to claim another victory.
It wasn’t so much who he was beating in the early part of his career, but rather how he was doing it and people really began to take notice when he stepped up to eight-round contests.
The previously unbeaten Benjamin Gurment was sent packing inside two rounds in February last year, before Ronal Ron (TKO4), Luis Lebron (TKO3) and Mike Ohan Jr. (TKO2) were also dispatched in rapid fashion.
Then came Mason’s first bit of real adversity, as he was dropped twice in the first round by Yohan Vasquez, but the American star responded in the best possible fashion and halted his opponent in the very next session.
Things have been more straightforward in his three outings since, with Manuel Jaimes failing to make it past the fourth round against Mason, who has beaten Carlos Ornelas (RTD6) and Jeremia Nakathila (RTD6) into submission on his last two outings.
Like Mason, Noakes (17-0, 15 KOs) has also been expertly guided to the opportunity and brings an impressive knockout ratio to the party, so the fans could be in for a treat when they lock horns.
It is the acid test for both men and if Mason can capture world honours at such a young age, then the stage will be set for him to become America’s next big boxing star.
