Joshua-Wilder 'makes sense' as Whyte cautions old rival on return

An Anthony Joshua-Deontay Wilder fight "makes sense" for Dillian Whyte, though he would love to face the former again.

The Briton is expected to face longtime rival Tyson Fury in a heavyweight super-bout later this year in the United Kingdom.

Amid confusion after the latter's win over Arslanbek Makhmudov on Saturday however, no deal is yet to be made for the bout.

Joshua has been linked to a tune-up fight against former WBC champion Wilder, a move that ex-challenger Whyte understands.

"'AJ' is probably most likely looking to fight Deontay Wilder now," he told Sky Sports News. "It's the fight that makes sense.

"If 'AJ' fights Wilder, he will sell and he will know Wilder out, I think. I would love [to fight] but no one's mentioned [it] to me."

Whyte was stopped by Joshua in the seventh round of a 2015 bout, and subsequently held the WBC interim belt for three years.

The latter is working his way back after a fatal car crash that left two of his close friends dead in Nigeria last December.

Whyte believes Joshua must be given the time and space to heal, amid the pressure of expectations to agree to a Fury bout.

"I personally think he's getting back in the ring too soon," he added. "What happened to him is a heavy loss. It's not light.

"I think he needs some more time to digest and break down what's happening. Your best friends, your family, it's a heavy loss."

Whyte raises concerns as Joshua returns

Dillian Whyte's concern for Anthony Joshua echoes similar sentiments, but it never hurts to hear it after a difficult few months.

The fact 'AJ' may fight as soon as mid-2026 after the tragedy he endured speaks to his mental fortitude, but also to the risks.

Matchroom supremo Eddie Hearn will surely not rush his man back to the ring, but at the same time, the clock is ticking too.

Tyson Fury will not wait forever when it comes to setting up one of the most-anticipated bouts of this heavyweight generation.

Joshua holds the cards however - and only he will be able to decide if the time is right for him to mount this comeback too.
