Eubank Jr. vs Benn: Legendary wrestler Bryan Danielson weighs in on grudge match appeal
Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn's grudge match has capitvated Bryan Danielson, with the legendary pro wrestler believing there is plenty for other combat sports to take from it.
The two meet at The Ring's Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves tonight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in a middleweight encounter where both will seek to settle their simmering feud.
Danielson, a star across two decades on the pro wrestling circuit with multiple promotions, is no stranger to mega-fights in his day job, having headlined several major events too.
But speaking to DAZN News ahead of the bout, the Washington fighter admitted that he had been intrigued by what his sport could take from the narrative behind the event.
"One of the things that I love about all [forms of] fighting is the stories that go into it," he said. "That's what I think has captivated people about this.
"What I'm interested to see when I watch these things is how the crowd interacts. From a professional wrestling standpoint, that's what you're interested in.
"It's how they elicit emotional reactions, and how we can learn from that. I look at it from a different perspective as far as the average fight fan.
"It's not who is going to win, it's how did they create this. This is not a title fight, so how do you create the emotional connection that's going to sell out a stadium?"
Danielson also expressed appreciation for the physical discipline needed by boxers to compete at the top level, noting that they cannot afford to give an edge in the ring.
"They have to be primed and a hundred percent ready for fight day," he added. I can go in at not a hundred percent and still be a great professional wrestler
"But you cannot walk into a fight like this not at a hundred percent. Otherwise, your opponent is going to take you apart. That's one of the big differences."
