Dana White’s grand ambitions in boxing will take a significant step this weekend when he plays an integral role in the promotion of Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford .
White’s role in the show will see him take on a prominent position and he has grand plans to change the boxing world just like he did with MMA.
The major factor behind the rise of UFC into the global brand it is today, White has ideas for boxing that he hopes will take the sport onto another level on a regular basis rather than just appealing to a wide audience whenever a big fight takes place.
Boxing’s lengthy history, array of promoters, and multiple world titles have made it hard for one person, or organisation, to fully govern boxing like other sports, and although White will face challenges along the way, he has ideas that he hopes will make boxing succeed.
Once a full-time mainstream sport, boxing’s popularity has waned due to numerous reasons, both inside and outside the sport. Bouts like Canelo vs Crawford happening on a regular basis could be one way of restoring its popularity and White has recently spoken about the matter.
“There’s a handful of people and fighters who people care about right now,” said White when speaking on the inaugural episode of Inside the Ring .
“There has to be a pipeline of young and upcoming guys. I believe that we can do that again.
“If you look at the UFC, it was for sale for $2m. Nobody wanted it. Nobody saw the vision. Nobody cared. We did.
“This is how you build an NFL or an NBA. This is how it’s done. I feel like I'm starting from scratch now.”
