Devin Haney feels Times Square fights are 'do or die' for himself, Ryan Garcia and Jose Ramirez

Devin Haney believes this week’s huge show in New York represents a “do-or-die” moment in the respective careers of three fighters bidding to become the face of boxing in the United States.

Haney stopped short of declaring a rematch with Ryan Garcia a certainty should he defeat welterweight rival Jose Ramirez on Friday night. Taking place in Times Square, Garcia, Haney and Teofimo Lopez will contest in three separate bouts, while the following day Canelo Alvarez makes his Riyadh debut against William Scull. Both fight nights are exclusively on DAZN PPV.

Garcia’s clash with Rolando Romero headlines Friday’s bill with Haney and Ramirez facing each other and Lopez taking on Arnold Barboza Jr for the WBO light-welterweight world title. Garcia, Haney and WBO super lightweight champion Lopez are all in the running to be the face of boxing in the United States.

And in an exclusive sit-down interview with DAZN, 26-year-old Haney said: “At this point that we’re all at in our careers, these are crucial moments for us – Ryan and me and Ramirez as well.

“These are do-or-die moments for us and I just feel like everybody is locked in and focused on outdoing each other to put on the best performance possible.”

If Garcia and Haney manage to beat their respective opponents on Friday, then it is expected the two will meet in a rematch of their April 2024 contest later this year.

Haney added: “Right now the only person on my mind is dealing with Jose Ramirez, being victorious, finishing my breakfast and doing my job.

“Then I can go from there and tell you what’s next.

“You’ve got to finish your breakfast first – we don’t know what’s on the menu after.

“But my chef prepared me some breakfast, so I’ve gotta go eat!”

San Francisco-born Haney admitted “I have a chip on my shoulder” but believes he can comfortably deal with Ramirez.

He explained: “Styles makes fights and on paper, I think Ramirez is a dangerous opponent.

“But I’d like to go in there, make it an easy night and have a fun night.

“I’m looking to go in there and handicap him to where they’re going to say after the fight that he wasn’t that dangerous.

“But on paper he is the most dangerous – outside of him and Teo – in terms of accolades.”

Haney also feels he is reaping the benefits of joining the DAZN stable several years ago.

“A lot of people were telling me not to go over to DAZN,” he recalled.

“I’m happy to see that they have such longevity in the sport and it’s only getting bigger.

“I’m thankful that I was one of the first to get in bed with them and I’m still here.

“Times Square is a legendary place to fight and I’m happy to be making history. I’m going in there to put on a show.”
