It's not the fight Devin Haney wanted. Still, it's the one he's obligated to take as the undisputed lightweight champion puts all IBF, WBA (super), WBC, and WBO belts on the line Saturday against George Kambosos Jr. from Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.
Haney and Kambosos first tangled, also in Melbourne, in front of 41,129 fans at the beginning of June. Haney neutralized Kambosos and earned a clear unanimous decision victory to become the first four-belt 135-pound champion.
There was an immediate rematch clause if Haney beat Kambosos. Despite fans not having much of an appetite for a sequel, Kambosos invoked the clause, and the fight goes down on Saturday.
"The Dream" plans on doing the same thing to Kambosos that he did a little more than four months ago.
“George Kambosos is quiet right now like he should have been before our first fight. Haney said in a statement when the fight was first announced.
“I’m expecting a hungry and determined Kambosos. I will be prepared for any adjustment he brings. This is a great opportunity to gain more Aussie fans and add to my legacy.”
Kambosos has kept a low profile as he looks to regain his titles.
“I am looking forward to October 16th (Oct. 15 in the United States) at Rod Laver Arena, and that’s where I will do my talking. Inside the ring," Kambosos said.
