Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez is in early talks over a a super-bout against Naoya Inoue, with Eddie Hearn calling a fight "inevitable".
Both the American and the Japanese star, among the sport's top-ranked pound-for-pound fighters, could be set for a dance.
Rodriguez, the unified super-flyweight champion, is scheduled to face Antonio Vargas at bantamweight on June 13 in Glendale.
That would move him just four pounds beneath super-bantamweight champion Inoue, and per Hearn, into their crosshairs.
“There have been early discussions with His Excellency [Turki Alalshikh] about Inoue against 'Bam',” he was quoted by The Ring.
"I do think that fight is inevitable. I don't think it is going to be necessarily straight after the Vargas fight, but it could be [...] quick.
"[It might be] in the next two or three fights. It's probably one of the biggest fights in boxing. It's one that 'Bam' likes the idea of."
Inoue is scheduled to defend his undisputed super-bantamweight title against countryman Junto Nakatani on May 2 at Tokyo Dome.
When the cards are eventually counted at the end of his career, Naoya Inoue's hall-of-famer status is readily assured by now.
But could 'The Monster' truly follow up a bout with Junto Nakatani by setting out in pursuit of success against Jesse Rodriguez?
A four-weight world champion, Inoue has already conquered bantamweight before, and plenty have suggested he may move on.
Instead, he could stay put or possibly even drop back from super-bantamweight for a possible fight-of-the-year contender here.
There is plenty of water still to come under the bridge before any discussion. But it does thrill the mind as a possible option.
