The peak of their careers didn't cross, but there was a time when a battle between Naseem Hamed and Floyd Mayweather was briefly discussed.
Hamed’s run at featherweight was eventually ended by Marco Antonio Barrera in 2001, and after only having one more fight, all talk of him vs. Mayweather was over.
Paulie Malignaggi, a two-weight world champion, has had his say on the potential classic and he gives the edge to Mayweather.
After enjoying some of the best moments of his career at 130lbs, Malignaggi believes that Mayweather’s size would've played a big part in ensuring victory for the American fighter.
“I think Mayweather would have beaten Hamed, remember Hamed was originally a bantamweight, so I think Mayweather would be too big for Hamed,” said Malignaggi when speaking to Lord Ping.
“It would be a fun fight and a great build-up, especially in today's social media age. Imagine them in their primes in today's social media age, that would be massive, but Mayweather would have been too big.”
