Jake Paul's pathway to a cruiserweight world title shot has taken a further twist this week with an incumbent champion's plans thrown into disarray.

'The Problem Child' steps up to heavyweight against former two-time champion Anthony Joshua this week in a fascinating encounter to end the year.

But the star has made no secret of his ambition to target belts around the 200lb division, and is currently ranked by the WBA as a key contender.

Now, Paul will watch with keen interest with suggestions that champion Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez will no longer defend his unified belts in January.

The Mexican was expected to defend his WBA and WBO straps against Robin Safar, but an injury for the latter appears to have scuppered a fight.

While the challenger had hoped to reschedule to February, The Ring suggests Ramirez may instead wait for a May bout against David Benavidez.

The WBC light-heavyweight champion defended his titles against Anthony Yarde last month, but is expected to step up in search of a new challenge.

Any such bout would further delay Paul's hopes of a title shot there, but an impressive performance against Joshua could yet improve his standing.

Noel Mikaelian reclaimed the WBC strap from Badou Jack earlier this month, while Jai Opetaia defended his IBF crown against Huseyin Cinkara.

Can Paul push on for title shot in 2026?

Jake Paul faces the biggest bout of his career so far this week - but even if 'The Problem Child' is a heavy outsider, defeat may still open doors.

The Ohio native has not shirked from the size of the challenge he faces against Anthony Joshua, and a gutsy ring performance could aid his case.

Paul will surely drop back to cruiserweight after this test, perhaps with his stock burnished - and with many understanding the appeal of his draw.

While only the WBA currently rank him, other governing bodies could follow suit, just as the division prepares to shuffle its cards around the deck.

A handy WBC or IBF spot could tee up bouts with Noel Mikaelian and Jai Opetaia, the latter of whom admits he wants the bigger names in play.

Few names come larger right now beyond the sport's traditional margins than Paul - and it would be fascinating to see if he is rewarded with a title shot.
