Many people in the combat sports world have formed opinions about Jake Paul. Some have said Paul is bad for boxing. Some have said he's great for the sport, as Paul is getting fighters good paychecks, more eyeballs, and has helped elevate women's boxing.
In the case of former UFC champion Luke Rockhold, who makes his professional boxing debut on Saturday in a Misfits on DAZN PPV headliner against former UFC fighter turned boxer Darren Till, he understands who Paul is. While praising him for how he's plotted his fight career, that doesn't change how Rockhold feels about Paul the boxer.
"Jake’s doing his thing. He’s alright," Rockhold said in an interview on the DAZN X Series YouTube channel. "But he does not deserve to be in the ring (Oleksandr) Usyk. What kind of bulls— is that? What kind of hype, what kind of bull— is that? What kind of f—ing bull— is that?
"Jake’s not that good. Look at his rhythm. Look at his boxing. He’s picking the perfect fights. He’s not fixing fights. People are f—ing out of their minds when they say this. He’s smart. He picks the perfect fights."
The fight versus Till from the AO Arena in Manchester, England, is for the MFB Bridgerweight Championship. The goal for Rockhold is quite simple if he wants to secure a future fight with Paul. Beat Till decisively, win the belt, and call Paul out to get on his radar.
"We’re all trying to chase the big money fights," Rockhold admits. "That’s what it’s all about. You’re lying to yourself if you’re not. I like to right wrongs. I like to show who the real fighters are in life. And of course, yeah, that’s a fight I would thrive in."
