Leigh Wood ends Josh Warrington rivalry with assured rematch victory

Leigh Wood produced one of the finest performances of his career to register another impressive victory over Josh Warrington and settle their rivalry for good.

The pair clashed for a second time at Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on Saturday night, almost three years on from the former's come-from-behind knockout win.

This time, it was a points victory for 'Leigh-thal' as the ex-world champion outclassed 'The Leeds Warrior' in a 119-109, 119-110 and 117-111 unanimous decision. 

In their first clash, Warrington was dominant from the outset before he was caught by a huge shot from Wood that immediately brought the fight to a close. 

This time, Wood had the quicker start, and once he had established authority on the bout, he had no intention of letting it go as he controlled the action and flow of the bout for the entirety of the contest.  

Warrington’s famed aggression, an attribute that has seen him reign as featherweight world champion, was absent for large portions of the fight as Wood kept moving and unleashing punches from a variety of angles. 

With the fight slipping away from him, Warrington did take more risks, but Wood was wise to whatever Warrington was planning, and he knew he had just to remain cautious to make it to the final bell. 

After the fight, the three judges scored widely for Wood, but the attention quickly turned to the next move of Warrington following the fifth loss of his illustrious career. 

Warrington would not commit to retirement, but after this setback, it may be hard for him to come back from such a devastating defeat.
