The heavyweights are in town as Deontay Wilder and Derek Chisora are busy hyping their fight. Let's look at who is dominating the headlines on Thursday, February 5.
Simon Jordan’s tough questioning was met with an abrupt response by Deontay Wilder when he joined the outspoken radio host to promote his upcoming fight with Derek Chisora .
Jordan’s lines of scrutiny focused on Wilder’s accusations against Tyson Fury for cheating in their fights, but the questions posed by the former Crystal Palace chairman did not sit right with the former WBC heavyweight champion.
After claiming he did not want to speak about Fury, Jordan continued despite Wilder wanting to focus on Chisora.
Jordan continued which forced Wilder to emerge out of his seat and launch an aggressive tirade against the visibly stunned interviewer.
Wilder exited the studio, cutting the segment short with Chisora following him shortly after seemingly annoyed at Jordan’s approach before later returning.
Josh Kelly produced a classy performance this past weekend to land the IBF super-welterweight title with a narrow points win over Bakhram Murtazaliev in Newcastle.
Kelly was a significant underdog heading into the clash, and he survived a late crisis when he was floored with a left hook to win via majority decision.
Although Murtazaliev appeared to accept defeat on the night, it appears a scorecard issue could force him to demand a rematch.
Dan Rafael has reported that Steve Gray’s 10-10 in the final round has caused some concern in Murtazliev’s camp as the fight would have been scored a draw if the nod in that session went to Murtazaliev.
Gray is allowed to score the round that way, but with so much riding on the outcome, the detail in this scoring has not gone down well with Murtazaliev.
If a complaint is lodged, the IBF will have to make a decision, but with the other two judges split on who won the round, it could be hard for the Eastern European to receive an immediate rematch.
Frank Warren has stated that the winner of Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder in April could be in pole position to face Oleksandr Usyk at some point this year.
The heavyweight pair were busy doing media rounds earlier this week, but it now looks like their fascinating encounter could have a big reward.
Both men have operated at the business end of the division for well over a decade, and the victor looks set to stay there with Warren indicating that a world title opportunity could be the reward for whoever comes out on top.
"The IBF, they'll be calling for Usyk to defend. Usyk's been given consent by the WBC, who's the next one in, to have a voluntary defence," said Warren when speaking to Sky Sports.
"After that he is supposed to fight Agit [Kabayel]. So, we'll see what happens with that. But the mandatories are being ordered, and they're going to have to be dealt with.
"They [Wilder or Chisora] could well be that. Derek was in that [mandatory] position."
