Talented, high-IQ heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr (12-0, 11 KOs) gets another stern test Saturday night when he clashes with Guido Vianello (13-2-1, 11 KOs) at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 25-year-old southpaw is coming off a third-round TKO victory over Isaac Munoz Gutierrez in December.
Meanwhile, Vianello, 30, delivered an eighth-round TKO of Arslanbek Makhmudov last summer.
Will Torrez continue his ascension up the heavyweight ranks? Or will the older Vianello provide a rude awakening for the rising star?
DAZN News analyzes the keys to victory for each heavyweight in this intriguing tilt.
Watch Torrez carefully and you’ll notice his penchant for constantly moving, feinting and changing levels to find openings to unleash his offense.
This movement, especially the changing of levels, can go long ways to Torrez freezing up the six-foot-six Vianello enough to catch him with something unexpected and damaging.
While changing levels toward forward progress in the ring, Torrez does a clean job of using that range-finding right hand to feel out his opponent.
Doing this efficiently against Vianello will provide Torrez with all the intel needed of when to strike, depending on the bait the Italian does take.
When the high-IQ Torrez notices Vianello biting on a feint or reacting to that range-finding right jab, it is up to the U.S. silver medalist to unleash his explosive left uppercut.
Torrez generates maximum force with this punch and will certainly gauge on whether the battle-tested “Gladiator” can withstand its impact.
Standing six-foot-six to Torrez’s six-foot-two, it is imperative for Vianello to be the bigger man in the ring.
This means using his weight and three inches of reach advantage against the southpaw, resorting to the clinch and pushing off on the Tulare, California product when Torrez’s movement gives him trouble.
Also, leaning on Torrez on the ropes and in corners could help sap some energy from the undefeated heavyweight.
If Torrez is going to show a willingness to level change and feint his way closer to trying to bulldoze Vianello, the Italian has the duty to catch the American heavyweight in traffic.
This could be done with a well-timed right hand that gives Torrez something to ponder or worse — putting him on his back.
Vianello comes over the top well with his right hand. With a height and reach advantage over Torrez, Vianello unloading with that overhand right is a major key.
He has the vantage point to pull off this punch in close quarters.
Now, it is just a matter of timing it over Torrez’s guard and landing it with a boom.
