Sol Cudos vs Kim Clavel: Who has the edge heading into their fight?

DAZN
Watch Cudos vs Clavel Saturday on DAZN

Kim Clavel was one of the splashy signings that Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) made in women’s boxing this year.

In her first fight under the promotion, the Montreal, Canadian native will challenge undefeated IBF strawweight world titleholder Sol Cudos at the Theatre St-Denis in Montreal, and live on DAZN , on Saturday night.

Clavel (21-2, 3 KOs), a former WBC light flyweight world champion, is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Anabel Ortiz in February. Meanwhile, the Argentinian Cudos (10-0-2, 3 KOs) produced a hard-fought split-decision win over Maria Sol Baumstarh in April.

Will Clavel make her MVP debut a memorable one at home by claiming another world championship? Or will Cudos defend her title and remain unbeaten at Clavel's expense?

With the anticipation bubbling toward this showdown, DAZN News analyzes who has the edge between the champ and decorated challenger.

Boxing Styles

Working behind a tight, disciplined guard, Kim Clavel is a pointed boxer in the pocket as she is able to punch in traffic and land her shots with accuracy and pop inside.

That especially is true for her penchant of splitting opponents’ guards with a poking jab and wrapping right hooks around their defense. She also is a potent counterpuncher who connects with crisp output off the front or back foot.

She will be up against the champion in Sol Cudos who pressures behind an active, yet disciplined guard, changing levels to stab to the body and loading up to the midsection with hooks, before pumping the jab upstairs.

The slight edge in styles goes to the more experienced Clavel.

Power

Both Cudos and Clavel carry pop to their punch, each counting three knockouts to their ledgers.

The eye test, and deeper body of work, however, shows that Clavel loads up on her power punches to produce more impact.

Another close category,  but one that goes to Clavel.

Mental Warfare

At 35 to Cudos’ 28, Clavel has fought in nearly double the amount of fights that her Argentinian counterpart has. With that comes a considerable mental advantage as far as experience goes. But this bout has her entering the pressure cooker for other reasons.

Making her MVP debut in her home of Montreal carries tremendous pressure to perform.

Cudos does not have that pressure. Then again, this marks the first time in her pro career that the champ will fight outside of Argentina and that in of itself can be a disorienting experience if Cudos does not adjust or allows the crowd to get to her.

This category is a squeeze, too, with Clavel getting the nod.

Who has the edge in Cudos vs Clavel?

When their styles clash, Cudos vs. Clavel could very well be decided by who wins the battle of the front foot. But the more experienced Clavel also has the ability to outbox Cudos with ring savvy from the outside.

DAZN News has the edge going to the challenger Clavel who has been in bigger fights and has learned from losses enough to make her MVP debut a world championship-winning effort.
