Cuba has produced many fine amateur boxers over the years, and it appears Andy Cruz is set to be the next professional star from the Caribbean island.
Dominant in the unpaid ranks, Cruz has made a fine start to his time as a pro, winning all of his first five fights in convincing fashion. Fast tracked into the title picture of the lightweight division, the Cuban may become a world champion before the end of 2025.
But just who is Andy Cruz? Here, DAZN profiles the star, including his personal stats, fight history and professional record, as well as his next bout.
Andy Cruz is a Cuban boxer who fights primarily at lightweight, having previously competed at bantamweight and light welterweight during his amateur career.
Born in 1995 in Matanzas, Cuba, Cruz turned professional in May 2023 after a glittering amateur career, finishing with a record of 140-9.
In the decade he spent in the unpaid code, Cruz earned six major gold medals, including three at the World Amateur Championships in 2017, 2019, and 2021, two at the Pan American Games in 2015 and 2017, and one at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Such pedigree has afforded the Cuban a platform to surge through the pro ranks. In his first fight, he defeated Juan Carlos Burgos for the vacant IBF international lightweight title, a belt he has defended four times since.
In his second bout, he added the WBA’s continental Latin American lightweight title to his growing collection.
Andy Cruz has contested five fights as a professional to date, recording five wins, with three knockouts across the length of his career.
None of Cruz’s five opponents had a losing record ahead of their bouts with the Cuban, with each one having at least 14 wins on their CV.
Andy Cruz returns to action this weekend, as the chief support on the undercard of Hitchins-Kambosos Jr at Madison Square Garden.
Shown live on DAZN this Saturday, June 14, Cruz’s fight will have huge ramifications in the lightweight division.
The Cuban faces Hironori Mishiro in an IBF lightweight eliminator, with Cruz rated third and Mishiro at fifth with the sanctioning body. Following the news of Vasyl Lomachenko’s retirement, the IBF have upgraded interim champion Raymond Muratalla to full title holder, with the American’s first defence likely to be against the winner of Cruz-Mishiro.
