The Week 9 Monday Night Football spotlight hits Arlington, where the Cowboys (3-4-1) host the Cardinals (2-5) in a matchup that will test the resolve of two teams still searching for answers.
Dallas looked like a contender this time last week after rattling off three straight wins, but a humbling loss to the suddenly dominant Denver Broncos has sent them back to the drawing board.
Dak Prescott, red-hot before that defeat, now faces pressure to recapture the form he showed earlier and get the Cowboys rolling again in the NFC East.
Prime time gives him the perfect stage to do it, and he’s got plenty of help. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens have been electric this year, forming one of the league’s most dangerous wideout duos.
Tight end Jake Ferguson, who was deadly quiet in Week 8 after a run of six touchdowns in four games, will be eager to get back in the end zone.
Javonte Williams continues to anchor the ground game. The former Bronco has been rejuvenated in Dallas, rushing for 633 yards at 5.1 yards per carry with eight scores.
Defensively, though, the Cowboys need answers. They’ve been torched through the air this season, and rank near the bottom of the league in several coverage metrics. Injuries have played a part, but fans aren’t buying excuses.
Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has come under heavy scrutiny, though owner Jerry Jones publicly backed him this week on 105.3 The Fan, saying, “That’s who I want in the foxhole with me.
"I still feel as strongly as I did the day I brought him in here. The things we’re dealing with here are not one, two major things. It’s a lot of little things we can’t get right."
They'll need to get those little things right, and quickly, or they will end up costing Dallas a postseason berth.
Across the field, the Cardinals are battling their own turmoil. Kyler Murray’s injury opened the door for veteran Jacoby Brissett, who made the most of his chance with steady play and leadership.
Brissett will start against the Cowboys after head coach Jonathan Gannon ruled Murray out, but Gannon did not rule out the possibility that Murray could be involved in some capacity.
Tight end Trey McBride, who signed a mammoth extension in the offseason, remains one of the NFL's best safety blankets. In contrast, rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. has been inconsistent. Arizona must get him more involved to stand a chance here.
Much like Dallas, the Cardinals have been beset with injuries, especially at running back. First, James Conner went down, then Trey Benson, leaving Bam Knight and Michael Carter as the top two options.
On defense, Arizona has to find a way to generate more pressure than they have to date; otherwise, Prescott, Lamb, Pickens, and Ferguson will pick them apart. Unfortunately for them, only Josh Sweat looks capable right now.
For Dallas, this is about staying in the NFC East race and perhaps the hunt for a Wild Card spot. For Arizona, it’s about ending the slide and finding hope for the back half of the season.
With so much riding on this one, viewers should make sure they don't miss it. The good thing is, with DAZN’s new Game Pass offer, you won't have to, as for as little as £34.99 you can catch this and every game from now until the end of the season.
AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas.
The Cowboys lead the series 56-35-1, but the Cardinals have won the last three meetings.
Brissett will be doing everything he can to play in this one, especially against this Cowboys' secondary.
However, the Cowboys should prevail. Cardinals' CB Will Johnson has had a strong start to his career, but Arizona doesn't have the means to contain Lamb, Pickens and Ferguson.
