What will the Chicago Bears do with the first overall pick?

Former NFL GM Rick Spielman has offered his opinion on the Caleb Williams vs. Justin Fields debate.

The Chicago Bears own the first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. USC quarterback Caleb Williams is the prized prospect. The Washington native is a former Heisman Trophy winner with massive potential.

However, the Bears currently have incumbent quarterback Justin Fields under contract and on the active roster. Chicago drafted Fields in 2021, and he is now an experienced NFL starter.

Fields has reiterated his desire to stay in Chicago, but he is still unclear on his future. The Bears have yet to decide what they will do at quarterback.

Speaking to 33rd Team, former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman has said, "I believe they will draft Caleb Williams and try to trade Justin Fields. If they keep Justin Fields, you have to look at what type of contract they offer."

Now entering his fourth year, Fields is eligible for a contract extension. His current contract is still a salary-controlled, inexpensive deal, but if the Bears keep Fields and take up the fifth-year option, it will cost them $22 million.

Williams is the cheaper option. His contract is a fixed rookie deal. But Fields is an experienced player. And he is only two years older than Williams. Moreover, rumours have suggested that Williams is indifferent to playing for Chicago.

The 22-year-old is from Washington. The Commanders have the second overall pick.

The NFL Draft is the biggest event of the offseason. And the Chicago Bears have a huge decision to kick it all off.
