Manchester City must rely on forgotten men in quadruple chase

There are few things Pep Guardiola enjoys more than a squad puzzle.

Rotation, reinvention, tactical tweaks that turn perfectly good players into something slightly different. But as Manchester City enter the decisive stretch of their season, Guardiola’s greatest asset may not be tactical innovation. It may simply be memory.

Specifically, remembering that the players drifting around the edges of the squad are actually quite good.

Ultimate Tier - heavyweight season

City’s FA Cup victory over Newcastle United offered a useful reminder. Guardiola made ten changes from the previous match, resting several regular starters and sending out what looked suspiciously like a second string.

It ended with a 3-1 win, two goals from Omar Marmoush and another from Savinho, and City comfortably into the quarter-finals.

For a team chasing success on four fronts, that performance felt like more than just progression in the FA Cup. It felt like a glimpse of how City might survive the fixture congestion that lies ahead.

Guardiola’s side remain in the Premier League title race while also navigating the knockout stages of the Champions League and the closing rounds of both domestic cups. The calendar between now and May is unforgiving, stacked with midweek European nights and weekend league fixtures that leave little room for rest.

That is where the so-called forgotten men come in.

Savinho has spent much of this season hovering on the margins. The Brazilian winger arrived with plenty of hype following his impressive displays in Spain, yet the Premier League campaign has largely unfolded around him. He has made just five league starts, often used as an impact substitute rather than a regular presence in Guardiola’s preferred XI.

But at St James’ Park, he reminded everyone why City wanted him in the first place. His equaliser – scruffy rather than spectacular – shifted the momentum of the tie and dragged City back into control of the match.

It was not a moment destined for end-of-season montages. Yet those are exactly the sorts of contributions that sustain trophy challenges. When the schedule becomes relentless, perfection is less important than reliability.

Marmoush’s contribution was more emphatic. The Egyptian forward has also found himself drifting in and out of the attacking rotation this season, with Erling Haaland remaining the focal point of City’s attack. But against Newcastle, he briefly seized centre stage, scoring twice in the second half to settle the contest.

Those goals did more than secure a cup victory. They illustrated the depth Guardiola will need if City are to keep their quadruple ambitions alive.

The most successful Guardiola teams have never relied on a fixed starting XI. Instead they function as an ecosystem, with players rotating in and out depending on fitness, tactics and form. But seasons like this demand that the supporting cast does more than simply fill gaps. They must win games.

City’s position in the Premier League means there is little margin for error as they chase the leaders. At the same time, Champions League ties demand Guardiola’s strongest possible line-up, while domestic cup matches continue to arrive with inconvenient regularity.

The result is a season that will test the entire squad rather than just the superstars.

And that is why performances like the one at Newcastle matter. Marmoush and Savinho may not dominate the headlines most weeks, but if City are to pursue four trophies simultaneously, the run-in will belong as much to players like them as it does to the usual stars.

Because quadruple chases are not sustained by the obvious names alone. They survive on the forgotten ones.
