What is the middle linebacker's role in the NFL?

What is a linebacker in the NFL? 

Typically grouped into two positions, a linebacker is either a middle linebacker (often referred to as a SAM or MIKE) or an outside linebacker.

The role of a middle linebacker is very different from that of an outside linebacker. Positioned between the defensive line and the secondary, the middle linebacker is one of the most versatile roles on the field - constantly active and heavily involved in the action.

The middle linebacker often leads their respective teams and the NFL in tackles.

What are the responsibilities of a middle linebacker? 

Defending the run

On rushing downs, middle linebackers are expected to read and react, diagnose plays, beat or evade blockers, and put themselves in position to make the tackle.

Defending passes

On a passing play, middle linebackers will be tasked with covering tight ends, running backs, and even wide receivers, preventing them from making the catch.

Sacking the quarterback 

In some schemes, middle linebackers regularly rush the passer from an off-ball alignment to create pressure on the opposition quarterback.

What skills does a good middle linebacker need?

From their off-ball vantage point, middle linebackers need to be excellent at diagnosing plays and communicating with their defensive teammates.

As with every NFL position, excellent athleticism is vital, where speed and agility are required to track ball carriers and cover pass catchers.

While modern middle linebackers are typically smaller than in years' past, they still need enough size and mass to take on would-be blockers near the line of scrimmage.
