The career of Philip Rivers looks like it's going to go forward for apparently a short time.

ESPN is reporting quarterback Philip Rivers is unretiring and heading back to the Indianapolis Colts and will be joining their practice squad. No official announcement has been made regarding the terms of the deal.

Rivers looked to be off into the sunset after hanging up the helmet after the 2020 season, which was his 17th. But the Colts came calling after starter Daniel Jones suffered a torn right Achilles tendon in Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Then third-string quarterback and rookie Riley Leonard replaced Jones and injured his knee. Backup Anthony Richardson has been injured reserve since October when he suffered a facial fracture.

It's unknown if Leonard will play on Sunday in a Week 15 matchup with the Seahawks, as he has a strained knee ligament. If Leonard can't go, Rivers might get the call after an impressive workout on Monday evening, according to ESPN.

In 2020, the 44-year-old Rivers led the Colts to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth. They ended up losing in the Wild Card round to the Bills. Right now, Rivers is a semifinalist for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame. But if Rivers is signed to the Colts' 53-man roster, then he loses his eligibility and wouldn't be considered until 2031.

Currently, the Colts sit at 8-5 and are one game back for the last AFC Wild Card spot and are in third place in the AFC South behind the Jaguars and Texans, respectively.
