Stefon Diggs makes bold sales pitch: 'You can't name a No. 2 better than me'

Stefon Diggs doesn't have a team right now, but it doesn't seem to be denting his confidence about where he ranks among the NFL's receivers.

"Everybody got a 1," he said in a video posted to his YouTube channel.

"Opportunities aside, people might say there's seven real 1s. In my opinion, I can compete with anybody, but take those as your 1s. You can't name a No. 2 better than me. There's not a No. 2 on a team.

"Let's presumably give people the credit and just say, 'OK, you want to take the No. 1 spot away.' Name your No. 2 receiver right now. Tell me how much he makes. My last question is: Is he better than me?"

The numbers behind Diggs' claim

At 32 and heading into his 12th season, Diggs' claim is hard to refute after coming off an 85-catch, 1,013-yard season.

Those numbers led the team and helped New England to a playoff run, albeit one that ultimately ended in heartbreak when they lost to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.

His impact in the postseason dropped off, with only 14 catches for 110 yards and one touchdown in four games, but by achieving his seventh 1,000-yard season in the last eight years, he showed he has plenty of juice left.

New England decided to move on anyway, releasing him this March once the math stopped working, a $26.5 million cap hit that made keeping him more trouble than it was worth.

Why Diggs is still unsigned

The football case for Diggs isn't really the holdup; if it were, he would've been on a team months ago.

Legal trouble complicated matters for a time, starting with a felony strangulation on one count and misdemeanour assault and battery on another, but was put to bed in May when a jury found him not guilty.

League investigators wrapped their own review last month, too, and the conclusion was straightforward: not enough evidence on file to support a conduct policy violation.

That cleared the last real obstacle standing between Diggs and a phone call from some team's front office, but with training camps only weeks away, he remains unsigned.

"I brought myself here," Diggs said in the same video. "Unfortunate at times, but I'm blessed. I'm going to be exactly where I'm supposed to be. ... I'll be fine, I know I'll be fine."

Time will tell if he gets his wish and is signed by the Washington Commanders, who currently lack a legitimate WR2 behind leading wideout Terry McLaurin.
