The Arizona Cardinals made Trey McBride the highest-paid tight end in NFL history when they signed him to a four-year, $72 million extension.

The mammoth deal highlights McBride's rise into the top tier of tight ends after a standout 2024 season with 111 catches, 1,146 yards, and three touchdowns.

McBride's extension set new benchmarks for total value, surpassing George Kittle's, and average annual salary, topping Travis Kelce's - while ranking second in guaranteed money behind only Kyle Pitts.

While the annual salary cap rise undoubtedly makes it easier for teams to spend more on player contracts, McBride's age and potential were also factors.

At only 25 years old, McBride represents a new wave of super-talented tight ends comprising Las Vegas Raiders Brock Bowers and Detroit Lions Sam LaPorta.

Who is most likely to surpass McBride's deal?

Bowers, who set new rookie records for receptions and total receiving yards in 2024, will almost certainly set new records with his next deal, assuming he continues to produce at a high level for the next few years.

Likewise, LaPorta's next deal could exceed the size of McBride's contract once his contract expires in 2026, but the Lions' player endured a dip in numbers in 2024 and must bounce back to rookie form to prove his worth.

Kittle remains one of the league's top tight ends and will command another significant contract. However, at 31, his age may limit the duration and, therefore, total value of his next deal.

Still, the guaranteed money in Kittle's next contract could rival McBride's, and we won't have to wait long for answers as the veteran's current deal expires after 2025.

The 49ers currently have ample cap space to extend Kittle's contract earlier, should they wish, but they are expected to spend a significant amount extending the contract of quarterback Brock Purdy first.

Summary

While it remains uncertain who will surpass McBride, one thing is clear - tight ends have become increasingly integral to the passing game in recent years, and their value has risen accordingly.

As the tight end market continues to evolve, McBride's deal stands as a new benchmark - and perhaps a glimpse at where the position is headed.

That news will be music to the ears of Kittle, Bowers, and potentially-elite 2025 NFL Draft prospect Tyler Warren.
