The Minnesota Wild is keeping one of the premier players in the NHL for a long time to come.

The team announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed left winger Kirill Kaprizov to an NHL-record eight-year contract extension worth $136 million. The deal lasts through the 2033-2034 season.

"We never wanted to entertain Kirill not being here," Wild General Manager Bill Guerin said in a statement.

Kaprizov's deal eclipses the NHL record total money and average annual value. The previous records were Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin ($124 million) and Edmonton Oilers standout Leon Draisaitl ($14 million AAV). Under Kaprizov's new contract, which will take effect starting in the 2026-2027 campaign, he will average $17 million a season.

Last season, the 28-year-old scored 25 goals along with 31 assists and a plus-19 rating in just 41 games. Kaprizov was drafted in the fifth round by the Wild in 2015. He's already become one of the best players in the history of the franchise. Kaprizov has the single-season franchise records for points (108), goals (47), and power-play goals (19).

In the COVID-19-shortened 2020-2021 season, Kaprizov won the Calder Trophy with 27 goals and 24 assists.

The Wild's season opener is on Thursday, Oct. 9, when they travel to St. Louis to battle against the Blues, which you can with NHL.TV on DAZN (excl. US and Canada).
