Stanley Cup winning goalie Frederik Anderson leaves Hurricanes for Oilers

Part of the machine that helped the Carolina Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup is heading north.

The Edmonton Oilers have signed goalie Frederik Anderson to a one-year deal worth $2.75 million on the first day of NHL Free Agency. 

Anderson leaves Carolina after five seasons. The 36-year-old was between the pipes on the Hurricanes' run to the Stanley Cup. He went 12-1, which included eight straight wins. But Anderson got replaced by Brandon Bussin in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Vegas Golden Knights due to a knee injury suffered in the series. 

During the 2025-26 regular season, Anderson posted a 16-14-5 record with a 3.05 goals-against average. Now, the native of Finland heads to Edmonton, who is looking to return to the Stanley Cup Finals after losing in the first round of this postseason in six games to the Anaheim Ducks. That series defeat was the first time in three seasons the Oilers didn't reach the championship round. 

There will be some competition for Anderson if he's going to be the starter in the 2026-27 campaign. The Oilers already have Tristan Jarry, who they traded for last season. Also, the team acquired Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
