The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is scheduled to take place from December, 21, 2025, through January, 18, 2026, with its host nation being in Morocco.
The tournament will be the 35th edition of Africa’s premier international men’s football competition, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
While it is officially referred to as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the event will be played largely in between 2025 and 2026 - a scheduling decision made to avoid clashes with the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, which was played in the summer of 2025.
Hosting AFCON for the first time since 1998, Morocco will use the tournament as a major showcase of its football infrastructure.
Matches are expected to be staged across several modern stadiums in cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier, and Agadir, highlighting the country's growing role in global football ahead of its co-hosting duties for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The competition will feature 24 national teams, all of whom qualify through CAF’s regional qualification process.
These teams will compete in a group stage followed by knockout rounds, culminating in the final match in January 2026, where the champions of Africa will be crowned.
AFCON 2025 is expected to attract significant global attention, not only due to its winter scheduling but also because of the high quality of talent expected to be on display, including many African players starring in top European leagues - with Morocco’s strong organisational reputation and passionate football culture, the tournament is widely anticipated to be one of the most memorable and inspiring editions in AFCON history.
AFCON follows a well-established tournament format that features 24 national teams, earning a spot through a continental qualification campaign organized by the CAF - once qualified, teams are divided into six groups of four (Groups A-F).
During the group stage, each team plays three matches, facing every other team in its group once over.
Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. At the end of the group stage the top two teams from each group automatically qualify for the knockout rounds, and the four best third placing teams across all groups also advance - the system allows 16 teams to progress beyond the group phase.
The knockout stage begins with the Round of 16, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final matchups.
All knockout matches are single-eliminination based, so if a match is drawn at 90 minutes it'll go to extra time, or a penalty shootout to find a winner - a third-place-playoff is usually held between the two losing semi-finalists.
