Why Bayern Munich must be considered genuine Champions League contenders ahead of Club Brugge visit

With two rounds of this season’s Champions League  played, Bayern Munich sit top of the pile.

It is where they will hope to end the campaign next spring as they bid to lift the famous trophy for a seventh time.

That would take the German giants clear of Liverpool and level with AC Milan in joint-second place of the all-time winners of European football’s elite competition.

Real Madrid remain way ahead of everyone with 15 European Cups but belief is growing in Bavaria that this could be Bayern’s year.

Having not been crowned champions of Europe since 2019-20, could Vincent Kompany’s reigning Bundesliga champions go all the way this time around?

Certainly their start to the season has given cause for optimism ahead of their Matchday 3 home clash with Club Brugge on Wednesday.

Heading into the international break, Bayern won 10 games straight to sit top of the Bundesliga and Champions League table.

In Europe they thumped Chelsea 3-1 at home and then hammered Pafos 5-1 in Cyprus, underlining the firepower within their ranks.

England captain Harry Kane has been in stunning form, arguably reaching new heights with his remarkable goalscoring return.

Twenty goals in just 11 appearances for club and country this season is testament to that.

Everything Kane touches turns to gold right now, with his last seven games having produced 14 goals.

Where will it all end? At his current rate, Kane is on track to comfortably hit a half-century of goals this season.

He is currently England’s all-time leading scorer with 76 goals in his 110 caps, having scored a brace in Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Latvia in Riga to secure World Cup qualification.

Kane will hope to lead Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions to glory in North America next summer, but there is much to achieve at club level first.

Notably keeping the Bundesliga trophy under lock and key for another season and going all the way in the Champions League.

Kane went into the recent international break having scored 103 goals in 106 appearances for Bayern since joining them from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2023.

Bayern, though, are not a one-man show. Far from it, in fact.

Luis Diaz has proved a shrewd recruit since arriving this summer from Liverpool in a £65million transfer.

He has weighed in with plenty of goals and assists while ex-Crystal Palace playmaker Michael Olise has continued where he left off last season, when he won the Bundesliga in his debut season at Bayern.

Nicolas Jackson, signed from Chelsea on September 1, opened his Bayern account in the recent Champions League win at Pafos.

There is quality everywhere you look in Kompany's side and there is no doubt they are genuine challengers to go all the way this season.

Winning has become a habit and, fuelled by Kane’s goals, there is an energy and a belief about Bayern that could see them take some stopping.
