Benfica 1-4 Chelsea highlights: Premier League side into quarter-finals

Chelsea battled a stout Benfica defence and a two-hour weather delay in Charlotte, North Carolina to earn a 1-4 victory in the Round of 16 in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Reece James scored a well-executed free-kick in the 64th minute to give his side the victory as Chelsea could not find a way to score during open play during the initial 90 minutes despite creating several chances.

Benfica's defence-first strategy was scuppered after James' strike but they were given a lifeline with the weather delay, which paused the match in the 86th minute. When play resumed it was the Portuguese side on the ascendency, and they got their equaliser via an Angel Di Maria penalty kick deep into stoppage time, forcing an additional 30 minutes of play.

That's where things went all wrong for Benfica as Gianluca Prestianni's red card just two minutes into the additional 30 meant that Chelsea would be up a player for almost a half-hour, and the Blues took full advantage as they scored three times in ET.
