Benfica meet Chelsea in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup on Saturday as the knockout stage continues.

This is a 9:00pm BST / 6:00pm ET / 1:00pm PT kick-off, and this and every knockout game are live and free on DAZN - register for your free account here.

It may not be surprising to see these two teams in the knockouts, but the order in which they qualified may have raised some eyebrows as Benfica topped Group C ahead of Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors while Chelsea were second in Group B behind Brazilian outfit Flamengo.

Regardless of how they got there, both sides will be focused on moving on to the quarter-finals. History favours Chelsea, who have won all three meetings between the clubs, although those matches were all over a decade ago.

In the here and now, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca expects a real challenge from the Portuguese giants.

“We know Benfica are a top club with a top manager and first-class players," Maresca said.

“It is going to be very difficult but we were 32 teams, now 16 remains and we hope to go to the quarter-finals.”.

Where is Benfica vs Chelsea?

Benfica vs Chelsea will take place at the Bank of America Stadium, located in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It is the home of MLS outfit Charlotte FC and NFL franchise the Carolina Panthers.

It is a stadium already known to both teams.

Chelsea played a recent friendly there against Real Madrid in front of 62,000 fans in August 2024, while the stadium was the venue of Benfica's victory over Bayern in their last outing.

Liverpool and Arsenal have also played at the stadium in recent years, while numerous internationals have been staged here.

Benfica vs Chelsea team news and talking points

Benfica

After their impressive display in their 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in their final group game, Benfica will be in a confident mood to record their first ever win over Chelsea.

Goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin was the star turn in that victory, making numerous top class saves to keep his side in front and, most likely, will be a key man again to keep the Premier League side's exciting young strikers at bay.

Experienced manager Bruno Lage will be keen to largely keep with the same side but will have to wait to see the effects of playing in 36 degree heat has had on his players.

Álvaro Fernández is available again after serving a one-match ban for picking up two yellow cards in the opening two matches

Lage will hope his experience of facing Chelsea in the Premier League, when he managed Wolves, will help him guide his side into the Club World Cup quarter finals.

In his time in the Premier League he faced Chelsea twice, drawing both matches.

Previous XI: A. Trubin, S. Dahl, N. Otamendi, António Silva, F. Aursnes, L. Barreiro, Renato Sanches, A. Schjelderup, G. Prestianni, Á. Di María, V. Pavlidis

Chelsea

After scoring his first goal for Chelsea in the 3-0 victory over ES Tunis, £30 million new signing Liam Delap will expect to start again.

That is even more likely with fellow striker Nicolas Jackson still suspended following his straight red against Flamengo.

Enzo Maresca made nine changes for that final group game, confident his wider squad would see off the Tunisians. He is likely to make a similar number of changes for this one to restore his strongest Xl.

Robert Sánchez should return in goal, with the likes of Reece James, Cole Palmer, and Pedro Neto all returning to the starting lineup.

Previous XIF. Jørgensen, M. Gusto, B. Badiashile, T. Adarabioyo, J. Acheampong,E. Fernández, R. Lavia, N. Madueke, C. Nkunku, K. Dewsbury-Hall, L. Delap

Benfica vs Chelsea prediction

This is where the FIFA Club World Cup really gets tasty, with what should be highly competitive, tight matches between some of the best teams in world football.

All three previous meetings have been settled by just a one goal margin, so expected this to be another close one. Benfica have the experienced and wiser players, but Chelsea have the confidence, energy and guile of youth.

While Benfica's win over Bayern was impressive, the Germans made nine changes for the one and still made the Portuguese side toil in extreme heat.

That fatigue could be the difference in this game, so we are going for Chelsea to win it in extra time.

Prediction: Benfica 1-2 Chelsea after extra time
