Canada's World Cup dream ends with heavy Croatia defeat

The World cup hopes of Canada are over after they were outplayed by a quality Croatian side at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar.

Despite starting the tournament impressively against Belgium in a 1-0 defeat, Canada were no match for Croatia as the 2018 finalists made their extra quality and experience count.

Canada made a brilliant start when Alphonso Davies was left unmarked in the box and the Bayern Munich star made no mistake as he headed home.

Any chance of Croatia wilting was quickly extinguished as they responded brilliantly to go in 2-1 at half-time. Andrej Kramaric slotted from a tight angle before Marko Livaja finished well from the edge of the area.

Cananda started the second half positively, but it soon became clear that they were second best to their European opponents. Croatia were able to step up their play and in the 70th minute, Kramaric pounced again to make it 3-1.

Canada tried their best to stay in the game, but Croatia’s extra quality ensured that they stayed in front with something to spare and they compounded Canada’s misery in stoppage time as Majer scored from close range.

Canada’s early exit now means that there’s everything to play for in the final round of games with Belgium likely to require a win against Croatia.

Morocco’s win earlier today against Belgium means they’ll be confident of progressing, but for Canada, it’s a case of playing for pride before they host the tournament with USA and Mexico in four years' time.

It's full time with Croatia romping home

Croatia were just too good. They finish the game as 4-1 winners and the game was never in much doubt once they went in front.

Majer makes it four

Croatia are a level above here. A mistake from the Canadian defence leaves it two on one against the keeper, and Majer slots home from close range.

Kramaric gets his second

Canada are on the verge of exit after Kramaric makes it 3-1. The Hoffenheim takes a cross out the air and finishes well to perhaps put the game out of Canada's reach.

The chances keep coming

Now Canada attack. David hits a great effort from the edge of the area but it's tipped over by Livakovic.

Kramaric goes close again

Kramaric has been a nuisance today and he's almost added to his tally. The ball is played back to him in the area but is strike is pushed behind by Borjan.

Canada start second half brightly

Osorio is on for the second half and he almost makes an immediate impact as his strike goes wide.

A brilliant first half comes to an end

What a game. Canada take an early lead but that was as good as it got as Croatia took over. The Europeans have finished the half strongly and they're good value for their 2-1 lead. i've got a feeling we've not seen the last of the goals.

Croatia turn it around

Livaja is on goal again and this time it counts. Canada can't get to grips with Croatia, and they've been punished. Canada started well, but it's Croatia finish the half stronger.

Croatia are level

Kramaric is played through and even though the angle is tight, he finishes brilliantly into the far corner.

Croatia have a goal ruled out

Croatia hit the net but it won't count. Livaja is offside by the narrowest of margins.

Croatia respond well

Croatia haven't let their early setback get to them. They're getting in good attacking positions but the last ball isn't the best.

We have a goal

Canada have taken the lead after 90 seconds. A superb cross from the right wing is headed in by Alphonso Davies. What a start for Canada. Can Croatia recover from their early setback?

The action is underway

There's plenty at stake for both sides

Still all to play for in Group F

Morocco's shock 2-0 win over Belgium earlier has really opened the group up. If Croatia fail to win today then they're going to need a big result in their last game against Belgium. Canada will fancy their chances against Morocco, but they could really do with getting their campaign up and running today.
