Could a permanent Carrick appointment reopen the door for a Man United exile?

A Manchester United departure that once looked definitive may still be influencing thinking behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick has made an immediate impact since stepping in as interim head coach, winning all three of his Premier League matches and guiding United back into the Champions League places.

That run has already prompted discussion about whether Carrick could be handed the role on a permanent basis and what that might mean for the squad he would inherit.

Carrick’s stance offers insight into a different direction

According to The Telegraph, Carrick would be open to reintegrating a Manchester United exile if he were to remain in the job beyond this season.

The report suggests that Carrick’s view contrasts with that of his predecessor, Ruben Amorim, whose final transfer window was defined by decisive exits.

During that period, Jadon Sancho joined Aston Villa on loan, Antony was sold to Real Betis, and Alejandro Garnacho moved to Chelsea

Marcus Rashford followed with a shock switch to Barcelona after falling out of favour, as United sought to reshape both the squad and wage bill.

Carrick’s reported openness does not indicate an imminent return, but it does hint at a different managerial philosophy.

Under his interim spell, United have focused on simplifying roles and restoring confidence within the team, with several players showing immediate improvement in output and cohesion.

Why a return remains complicated

The barriers to any return are significant as United did not include a recall clause in Rashford’s deal, underlining how determined the club were to move him on at the time.

Rashford has since rebuilt his form in Spain, registering nine goals and 12 assists this season.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is understood to be keen to activate the £26 million option to buy at the end of the campaign, which would make any return even less likely.

At 28, Rashford is in his prime, settled in his current environment, and is expected to appear for England at the upcoming World Cup.

For Carrick, the immediate focus remains on maintaining momentum, with Tottenham Hotspur visiting Old Trafford in Saturday’s Premier League lunchtime kick-off.
