The goals came exactly twenty years after his first-ever World Cup goal, and mean he is now level with Miroslav Klose as the all-time leading tournament goalscorer on 16 goals.
It was also the Argentine icon's first-ever hat-trick at the finals, proving that he's well up for the challenge of leading his country to become the first nation to defend their crown since Brazil in 1962.
Big boys come to play
It wasn't just Messi who stepped into the spotlight on Tuesday; the big boys very much announced their arrival with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland making their mark.
Mbappe netted twice in France's impressive second-half showing against Senegal, to not only take his own World Cup total to 14, but in doing so became his country's all-time leading goalscorer - much to the chagrin of Olivier Giroud watching on in the BBC studio.
Then, just hours later, Erling Haaland took just half an hour to net his first World Cup goal as he went on to get a brace in Norway's 4-1 win over Iraq.
Business just picked up in North America.
We're all Harry Kane
Tonight sees the turn of England, as they open their campaign against Croatia in Dallas, and maybe a strong performance from the Three Lions will change some of the lines of questioning in Thomas Tuchel's pre-match press conferences.
Previewing the game, Tuchel was once again asked about this nationality, and it cut to a shot of Harry Kane alongside him, who couldn't quite manage to stifle an eye-roll at the tedious question aimed at his manager.
