Every World Cup brings new innovations, whether that be the match ball, new rules or some new tech to improve the game.

The latest move, however, is a new addition to the shirts worn by players at this summer's tournament across North America.

For anyone making their competition bow in 2026, you'll notice something different about the shirt they play in during that first appearance

What are World Cup debut patches?

For the first time, players making their World Cup debut at the 2026 finals will sport a new patch on their shirt to mark the special occasion.

It's a tradition that has been part of American sports for some time, but it will be introduced for the first time this year and will see names such as Lamine Yamal, Erling Haaland and Michael Olise wear the patch during their first game.

The patch's life will not end there, however. As part of a new licensing deal with trading card company Fanatics, the patches will be preserved and included on future trading card sets.

Although the deal with Fanatics doesn't begin until 2031 - with Panini the current partner - they will be saved and used once the new deal kicks in after the 2030 tournament.

The idea is to highlight the tournament rookies and make a bigger deal of their first-ever World Cup appearance.

With 48 teams involved in what is the biggest-ever tournament - including several nations for the first time - expect to see a lot of these patches on player shirts across the first round of group games.
