Newcastle United versus Liverpool, at St James’ Park or Anfield, is always an occasion to increase the heartbeat.
The fixture has produced countless classics, including a match widely regarded as the greatest in Premier League history in 1996, and last night’s stormy affair on Tyneside stirred the blood of every supporter and neutral alike.
While the quality was perhaps not what we have been accustomed to when these sides meet, for sheer drama it was utterly compelling as Arne Slot’s defending champions nicked it at the death.
Here, DAZN News assesses five memorable battles between the Magpies and the Reds, including last night’s encounter.
The Magpies, newly promoted to the Premier League, took Liverpool to the cleaners courtesy of a finishing masterclass by Andrew Cole.
Kevin Keegan’s side had won the Division One title the previous season and Cole’s first-half hat-trick in freezing conditions accounted for Graeme Souness’ visitors.
The striker produced three close-range finishes and ended the campaign as the Golden Boot winner, scoring a record number of 34 goals in 40 games for the Magpies during the 1993-94 season.
Souness lost his job in January and was replaced by Roy Evans as Liverpool ended the season in eighth position while Newcastle secured a third-place finish.
They also completed a league double over the Reds, beating them 2-0 at Anfield in April with goals from Robert Lee and that man Cole.
This was an incredible game which saw Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore both score twice.
Fowler opened the scoring but Newcastle replied with two quickfire goals from Les Ferdinand and David Ginola in front of a stunned Kop.
Fowler’s second made it 2-2 in the 55th minute before Asprilla put Kevin Keegan’s side back in front.
Yet the drama was far over as Collymore levelled matters before drilling in a late, late winner in front of the Kop, sparking wild scenes in the home stands.
The defeat was a huge blow to the Magpies’ title prospects and in 2003, the game was awarded the Match of the Decade award on behalf of the Premier League.
You would have got long odds on a repeat scoreline of the previous season’s classic.
And yet that is precisely what happened after the Reds edged out the Magpies in another incredible Anfield encounter.
It appeared to be plain sailing for the hosts after they steamrolled their way into a 3-0 interval lead.
Steve McManaman opened the scoring before Patrick Berger and Robbie Fowler added further strikes.
Incredibly Newcastle, under the management of Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, hit back through Keith Gillespie, Faustino Asprilla and Warren Barton to make it 3-3.
Still, the Reds were not finished and Fowler headed in his second in front of the Kop in the last minute to settle another amazing game.
This brilliant encounter came in a season which saw Liverpool win their 20th league title and Newcastle secure their first domestic trophy for 70 years after beating the Reds in the Carabao Cup final.
This clash on Tyneside in early December saw Eddie Howe’s men put a dent in the Reds’ title bid.
Alexander Isak put Newcastle ahead with a stunning strike and Curtis Jones levelled before Anthony Gordon restored the hosts’ lead.
Two goals from Mohamed Salah put Liverpool 3-2 ahead with seven minutes to go but Fabian Schar volleyed in from a free-kick that Caoimhin Kelleher came for but failed to claim to ensure a deserved point for Newcastle.
Rio Ngumoha enjoyed a Premier League debut that was surely beyond his wildest dreams as he scored a dramatic late, late winner.
The 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha made history as the youngest scorer in Liverpool’s history as Arne Slot’s men pilfered the points in the 10th minute of added time.
The match was played out against the backdrop of the Alexander Isak saga as the wantaway Newcastle striker was again absent as he bids to force through a move to Liverpool.
As the travelling supporters chanted “Hand him over, hand him over, hand him over Newcastle”, Ryan Gravenberch fired the visitors in front.
Hugo Ekitike, who turned down the Magies to join Liverpool this summer, added a second but Newcastle roused themselves in spectacular fashion at a frenzied St James’ Park despite having Anthony Gordon sent off in first-half stoppage time.
Magpies captain Bruno Guimaraes gave them hope with a diving header after 57 minutes and substitute William Osula got in ahead of Gravenberch to bundle in an 88th-minute equaliser.
Still the drama was not over as Reds substitute Ngumoha, at 16 years and 361 days, kept his cool to fire home in the 10th of 11 added minutes.
His winner also made him the fourth youngest scorer in Premier League history, behind James Vaughan, James Milner and Wayne Rooney.
