“It is a surprise to see Chelsea where they are but when you have that number of players underperforming, you’re not going to play as well as you should,” he said.
“At the moment, other than Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher, there aren’t many that are playing at the level they should.
“Gallagher wasn’t one of the top players coming through at Chelsea in his age group, but that might be what helped pushed him to keep improving. He’s a great lad and sometimes it is little elements of adversity that kick you into gear. Now he and Chelsea are reaping the benefits of that.
“Questions were asked about him being sold in the summer. If you asked the match-going fans, they would be fuming if he was sold. He and all his family are Chelsea fan, he’s a homegrown talent and he cares about the club.”
