Former Premier League defender advises Manchester United against striker signing

Manchester United fans will be expecting a summer of transfer activity in the close season, as the club looks at ways to improve on what's been a disappointing 2024-25 campaign.

Although they could still find success in the Europa League, they are set to finish on the lowest-ever points total in the Premier League and it spells big changes for the club ahead of next season.

The Red Devils have already been linked with several different names when the transfer window opens in July, with plenty of speculation around a move for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian has scored 17 goals for the midlanders this year, but speaking to Paddy Power, former defender Bacary Sagna isn't sure he's the right fit for United.

"Playing for Wolves and playing for Manchester United are both different types of pressure," Sagna said.

"It’s about how you’re going to cope with that pressure, with your teammates and a different atmosphere. Matheus Cunha is a top player and is very creative.

"He is very fast on the ball when he plays for Brazil. It would be a good signing, but I’m not sure if it is the right signing for Manchester United.

“Any player can have a good impact at Manchester United. It’s not only about one player, it’s about the whole team. It will still be an amazing signing but if it means that it’s on him only to turn the old squad
to a successful one – then I’m not sure.”

It's not just incomings that the club will be looking at, there's set to be a number of high-profile departures from the squad as Ruben Amorim tries to mold a team in his vision going into his first full campaign in charge.

Sagna believes there are a number of areas that need addressing, but also earmarked two notable names the club should show the exit door to.

Adding, "Manchester United need to refresh their team. Mason Mount didn’t have the impact that they expected, so he might leave. We didn’t see much of him.

“I think it’s the right time for Alejandro Garnacho to move on too. He started well but he is at a stage where he needs to be playing more consistently. It doesn’t seem right for him to be at Manchester United.

“The defence is ageing – so maybe bring in more young and fresh players. You can’t change the whole team, but they need to focus on the goalkeeper first of all. They need a keeper that doesn’t play out with his feet. A keeper must dive and stop the balls.

"Nowadays, people and coaches are too focused on someone that can play with their feet. Before you can play with your feet, you need to stop taking too many risks.

"Manchester United have been making too many mistakes and are conceding too many goals.”
