Free Agent XI: who are the best players available for nothing this summer?

Now that the regular season has ended, teams can start preparing for a busy summer of transfer activity ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

There have already been some significant transfer rumours ahead of the summer window, and news will only intensify with the FIFA World Cup showcasing the best talent on the globe.

While there will be big spending, there are also some bargains to be had this summer, with a host of talent available as free agents after their respective contracts expire at the end of June.

There is not a glut of goalkeepers out of contract this summer, but one man who will certainly be on the move is Leeds United shotstopper Illan Meslier.

The 26-year-old's time at Elland Road has been marred by mistakes, but he still has plenty of time to turn around his career and will be keen for a fresh start.

When it comes to experience and honours, they do not come much better than John Stones, who will be leaving Manchester City after a decade with 17 major trophies to his name.

Ibrahima Konate

Although Ibrahima Konate's Liverpool contract is set to expire at the end of June, there is a belief that it is only a matter of time until he puts pen to paper at Anfield.

The France international took a lot of the blame for the Reds' demise this campaign, but he is expected to compete for his place alongside Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jaquet next term.

Another German available this summer is Julian Brandt, whose contract is up with Borussia Dortmund, but unlike Goretzka, he will not be on the plane to the World Cup.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a host of top clubs across Europe and boasts 127 goal contributions in 307 appearances for Dortmund, while he is also highly experienced at international level.

One of the most in-demand players this summer will be Bernardo Silva, who produced some of his best football at the Etihad this campaign as City fell narrowly short of the Premier League title.

Dusan Vlahovic

A striker who is always in the transfer conversation is Dusan Vlahovic, but with his contract at Juventus up this summer, he will finally be on his way out of Turin after four and a half years at the club.

His numbers may have dwindled in recent years, but his seven goals in 19 Serie A games this season are no bad feat, having missed a substantial chunk of the campaign with an abductor injury.
