Grant McCann eyes attacking signings as missed chances cost Doncaster

PA

Grant McCann is keen to source some “help” for Doncaster in the transfer market after being left to bemoan a lack of cutting edge in the 1-1 draw with Bolton.

Continuing their upturn in performances, Rovers dominated large stretches of the game against promotion-chasing Wanderers and deservedly led through Glenn Middleton’s strike early in the second half.

But they were left counting the cost of missed chances when substitute Kyle Dempsey netted a 78th minute equaliser.

McCann believes the lack of a killer instinct is all that is stopping his team from climbing the table and is determined to rectify the problem with new signings.

“I was really pleased with the performance again and I think we followed that on from the Stockport game,” he said. “I think we should have had two or three goals in the first half. We created some really good chances again, but unfortunately at this time they’re not going in for us.

“This is why I am talking about getting the boys some help. We’re in the top six teams in the division for creating chances, but we’re not scoring enough goals to take the game away from the opposition.

“When we go one up, can we go and get the next one? We pushed for that but we didn’t get it.

“The frustrating thing is that we didn’t give Bolton much all game and the one opportunity they get, it comes off Dempsey’s heel and loops over the top of Ian Lawlor.

“That sums up our luck at the minute and we need to try to get ourselves out of it.”

Bolton head coach Steven Schumacher admitted the direct approach his side adopted was not “pretty”, but he felt it was the best option on a difficult playing surface.

He said: “I felt going that way, playing with those three strikers and going a bit more direct, was probably the right thing. When I saw in the week their pitch, it’s difficult to play on.

“When I saw this morning when our website put up a picture of it, I’m thinking, ‘You know what, maybe it’s a game where we’ve just got to grind it out’.

“The third game in six days is obviously a challenge physically so we went a bit more direct, which obviously isn’t pretty.

“In the end, for probably the first time in God knows how long, they’ve had more shots and more shots on target than us. We didn’t have our best attacking play, but we haven’t got beaten which is in the end a positive.”
