An athlete's job requires peak physical conditioning nearly year-round, meaning days off from work are often still spent moving.
For Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender, the balance between rest and physical activity is important when he's not training with his team or playing in matches.
"I really believe in active recovery," Callender said. "I believe in movement is medicine.
"And so when I have a day off of soccer, I still like to ride my bike, do some stretches, go for a walk, get out in the sunshine and just connect to nature."
The 27-year-old is still relatively early in his career, having only made his MLS debut in 2022, but he is already changing the way he looks at his time off the pitch.
The arrival of his daughter, Berkeley Nova, last year has added a new dimension to Callender's off-field routine with wife Kyra.

"The most important thing to me on my day off is spending time with my family," he said. "Once you have a child and you become a parent that family time is so important.
"You know, being a pro athlete, there's definitely a commitment to your job and your training and all the games, but any time you have to spend with your family is so valuable, especially in these early years. Like our baby is already five months [old], and at some point, she was five days and five weeks, and now she's five months. So time's flying by.
"My days off are still days on, because there's things as a parent you need to pertain to, and it's like I'm always doing something.
"And so, whether I've had a two-hour training and I come home and I see my daughter Berkeley with a smiling face — clean slate, right there. You know, it gives me so much and allows me to pour into her even more."
The demands of being a professional player alongside those of being new parent are tough, but Callender knows that as a high-level athlete he's already in rarified air that will become even more stratified when Inter Miami rubs shoulders with some of the biggest teams in the world this summer at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Juggling that dual role of professional footballer and new father is a challenge he welcomes.
"[Just] owning that responsibility," Callender said, "and realizing like, hey, like you're becoming an adult, you're doing something that not many people get to experience in their lives."
