Inter booked their place in the Round of 16 after topping Group E with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over CA River Plate in their final fixture. Fluminense, meanwhile, emerged as runners-up from Group F, ensuring they would progress with a tense and tight 0-0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns last time out.
Inter coach Cristian Chivu is expected to make one change to the starting XI on duty against River, with young goalscorer Francesco Pio Esposito set to be replaced by Marcus Thuram due to muscle fatigue. Flu counterpart Renato Portaluppi will hope to welcome back experienced defender and captain Thiago Silva (leg muscle injury) after he was rested as a precaution against Sundowns.
The winners of this clash will move on to a quarter-final showdown in Orlando on Friday, 4 July.
Internazionale: Sommer; Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez.
Fluminense: Fabio; Samuel Xavier, Thiago Silva (c), Rene, Freytes; Martinelli, Nonato, Hercules; Cano, Canobbio, Arias.
"He (Francesco Esposito) is a young guy, and he has all the future in front of him. I have known him since he was a little kid and I am very happy to see him play at this level."
Cristian Chivu, Inter coach
"We have four Brazilian teams in the Round of 16 so the feeling is amazing. We have to enjoy it now, because it is unique for the history of the club. For us it is not a surprise because already knew our level of play, our quality. This tournament gives us an opportunity to show the quality of the Brazilian championship. The fans have put on a show. They are holding our team, pushing us forward so I think it is unbelievable the synergy between the tam and fans. I think this is a unique moment in my life"
Nonato, Fluminense FC midfielder
