Liverpool set unwanted Premier League record in late loss to Wolves

Liverpool boss Arne Slot described his side's late 2-1 loss to Wolves last night as being the 'same old story' as now they have the record of conceding the most winning goals after the 90th minute in a single Premier League season.

As fans saw Andre's shot deflect off Joe Gomez and into Alisson's goal; they got that same sinking feeling again.

Palace and Chelsea, done it to them at the start of the season, Bournemouth did it in January, City added to it last month, now bottom club Wolves have added their name to the list.

Back at the start of the season, when the side won three of their first four games with last-minute goals, people praised them as being a "mark of a champion."

But now, with the side sitting fifth, still in the European spots, but not winning with the same conviction, those wins to begin their campaign most likely were covering up what was going to come later in the season.

Tuesday night was the fifth time that they had conceded a winning goal after the 90-minute mark, overtaking Watford in 17/18, West Ham and Watford 21/22, and Southampton 24/25, who all had four, with Watford in 21/22 and Southampton last season both getting relegated.

This was a story that Liverpool fans knew all too well about: dominating a side but failing to create clear-cut chances, and being punished late on with barely any time to respond.

Going into Tuesday night's game, not many gave Wolves much of a chance, but in the past five days, Molineux has seen as many wins in that time as they have in the previous 10 months, and even more points than what Spurs have gotten this calendar year.

Liverpool's performance was not of a side who were challenging for Champions League football; they left too many gaps when chasing the game late on, and although Wolves' winner was harsh on Gomez, they took their chances when they came to them.

Although eyes were on Liverpool breaking records, Wolves were able to put up some impressive ones themselves.

According to Opta, it was the second-latest time a team has scored with their first shot of a Premier League match, after Fulham vs. Newcastle in October 2022 in the 88th minute.

As well as being the first bottom-placed side since West Brom in 17/18 to beat two teams in the top five in the same season, and the first ever to do it in consecutive matches.

Despite spending close to £450 million in the summer, Liverpool continues to have glaring holes in their squad and desperately misses Florian Wirtz's creativity; his return from a back injury can't come soon enough.

This seems to be a more recent issue, as Liverpool had games wrapped up last year and didn't have to worry about conceding late on much, as they led 14 of their 38 league games by two or more going into the 85th minute.

Comparing that to this year, it's only been four times, and the game against West Ham on the weekend was the first time they had gone 3-0 up within an hour.

Whilst this result might not go a long way in Wolves staying up, it may become detrimental in Liverpool getting Champions League football.

Wolves will have the chance to do it all over again as they take on Liverpool in the FA Cup in two days' time.
