The Champions League  returns for the 2025-26 season, and you can see all the action live in selected countries on DAZN.

The competition once again begins with the new league phase  after it was introduced last season, and matchday one sees some huge games across three nights, including Liverpool's opener against Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool are always a threat to win this entire competition, having been crowned champions of Europe a whopping six times.

Arne Slot guided the Reds to the Premier League title in his first season in charge last term, but suffered agony in the Champions League.

Liverpool were beaten on penalties by eventual tournament winners Paris St-Germain in the last 16 of Europe's premier competition.

Last season, Atletico Madrid was eliminated from the Champions League, also at the last-16 stage, by Real Madrid in a penalty shootout after Julian Alvarez's penalty was controversially disallowed.

Domestically, Diego Simeone's side finished third in La Liga last season and have made a distinctly sluggish start to their league campaign this term.

But a trip to Anfield in the Champions League is always guaranteed to stir the blood of Liverpool and visiting teams alike, so Simeone's men will look to cause an upset against the champions of England.

DAZN News  has all the information ahead of Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid.

Alexander Isak - Liverpool

The Sweden striker recently arrived at Anfield in a British club-record £125million transfer from Newcastle United, where he emerged as one of the best goalscorers in European football.

Having arrived from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022, Isak scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the St. James’ Park club.

Isak netted 54 times in 86 Premier League outings for the Magpies, with 23 of those goals coming last season, when he finished second behind Mohamed Salah in the race for the Golden Boot.

Julian Alvarez - Atletico Madrid

Last summer, Alvarez was transferred from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid in a move worth around £82 million.

The Argentine forward has since flourished in Spain, producing an impressive first season at the Metropolitano and quickly becoming integral to Diego Simeone’s plans.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid prediction

Earning a result at Anfield is a daunting task for any visiting team, and Atletico will be challenged during every minute of play.

They have enough quality to give Liverpool a game but the Reds have the requisite firepower to edge an entertaining encounter and get their campaign off to a winning start.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-2 Atletico Madrid
