The Premier League kicks off its 2025-26 campaign today with reigning champions Liverpool hosting AFC Bournemouth.
It's been a summer of transition for the Reds, who have spent over £265 million in order to maintain their spot atop England's top flight. They've parted ways with stalwarts Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez while welcoming Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike, and others as Arne Slot continues to put his stamp on a squad that topped the Premier League in his debut season.
Sadly, they also said goodbye to Diogo Jota, who was tragically killed in a car accident last month and had his number 20 retired by the club in his memory.
On the other side of the pitch are Bournemouth, who finished ninth last season and look to match or improve on that mark.
However, it will be tough for the Cherries to maintain the level they reached last year as they've sold off a lot of key pieces over the summer, including Dean Huijsen (Real Madrid), Illia Zabarnyi (PSG), and Milos Kerkez, who could line up against his old side after his £40,000,000 transfer to Liverpool.

Arne Slot, Liverpool
(via Liverpool)
"[They are] intense. They made it really difficult for us last season. We beat them 3-0, where you feel like ‘What is he talking about, difficult?’ But if you look at the game, they had the first big chance of the game, they scored a goal which was fractionally offside. Then we three times, I wouldn’t say counter-attacked them, but we were very fast in moving the ball from back to forward. And all of a sudden at half-time we were 3-0 up, and then I thought – which I always thought when I was a manager in Holland – ‘This is going to be four, five or six-nil’.
"But the mentality Bournemouth showed in the second half, they just kept on going. That’s the mentality they had throughout the whole season afterwards as well. They also lost some players, they also brought in good new ones – as they’ve shown in the last few years, that they can always bring in good new players. And away, it was even more difficult for us. So, very good team, good manager, and a challenge for us on Friday. But looking forward to it because an evening game at Anfield is something that everyone is looking forward to it."

"We are the first game, and a lot of people will be watching us. It's not the place you want to start your season, at the home of the champions. Also, after they lost the other day [in the Community Shield] despite controlling and they probably want a reaction."
"It's a big test for us, and in the beginning, it's going to be emotional with the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. But we will focus on our job, try and create some chances, keep believing, and give them a hard game. Let's try to go there and give them a surprise."
Emotions will be running high at Anfield as the reigning champions kick off the 2025-26 campaign. Liverpool is too strong a side to falter in these circumstances, especially against a side likely headed for another mid-table finish at best.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Bournemouth
