Matchweek 25 ended with a bang on Sunday as Manchester City claimed a 2-1 victory over Liverpool after a thrilling final 20 minutes produced three goals, a penalty, two VAR checks and a red card.

The Sky Blues were minutes away from dropping points at Anfield against the defending Premier League champions, who went ahead in the 74th minute thanks to another sensational free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai.

However, City fought back and equalised 10 minutes later through Bernardo Silva, and they then took the lead after Erling Haaland coolly slotted home a penalty kick in the third minute of stoppage time.

Both teams controlled the match for large stretches of play, but in the end City got what they needed as they kept pace with league-leading Arsenal.

For Pep Guardiola, Sunday's match had a bit of everything — including the much-needed three points for his side to keep Arsenal from ending the weekend with a nine-point cushion.

"It was a brilliant advert for the Premier League," the Man City manager told the BBC. "First half was really good and we lost a bit of momentum in the second half. Anfield can feel like that.

"After that, we played more direct and after that we lost the ball and we were so passive. What a strike from Szoboszlai and after that, led by our captain Bernardo, we come back."

When asked about the stark constrast between the first and second halves, the former in which his side dominated while in the latter they laboured until the the dying stages, Guardiola explained that his players are feeling the effects on a congested fixture list.

"The spirit has been there and in general the first half was really good and second half a bit of fatigue," he said. "Omar [Marmoush] and Erling were passive and that's why we struggled."
