Fernandes' goal was the result of a penalty call inside the opening minute, as United's high press caused a turnover that forced a foul inside the City 18-yard box. Similarly, Shaw's strike came five minutes into the second half with United pressing.

Despite the goals, City finished with 67 percent possession and outshot the visitors 23-8, but United was content with absorbing the pressure and picking out opportunities to attack.
