Edwin van der Sar believes current Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana will continue to improve and have a "fantasic career."

Onana has received criticism for his decision-making at times, with several costly errors in high-profile matches leading some to question whether the 28-year-old is the long-term solution for the Red Devils.

Mistakes by Onana against Nottingham Forest and Viktoria Plzen in back-to-back matches in December led to some calls for Ruben Amorim to give the club's other goalkeeper's a chance, but the United manager has stuck by the Nigerian.

In an exclusive interview with Oddspedia, while speaking on behalf of bet365, Van der Sar, a four-time Premier League winner with the Red Devils earlier this century, backed Amorim's decision to stick by the goalkeeper as he feels that Onana's mentality will allow him to go far.

“I think that's it quite early but Andre has a fantastic career in front of him," Van der Sar said. "He's gaining more experience. He has all the qualities that a goalkeeper needs so I'm sure for the next five to six years he will keep improving.

“He has the right attitude to be the goalkeeper for Man United for a very long time.”
