Neither team should come away very impressed with their respective performances after Manchester United and Manchester City played to a dour scoreless draw on Sunday, but United manager Ruben Amorim found a long list of improvements that his side will need to make in order to rejoin the Premier League's elite.
The Red Devils attempted more shots than their crosstown rivals in Sunday's match but that was about all that they did better than visiting City, who enjoyed the majority of possession and managed to get more shots on target than the home side.
For Amorim, the statistical imbalance speaks to a larger issue within his own team. A game against a rival club that has found much more success in recent years just amplifies United's own weaknessess, according to their manager.
"We have so many aspects to improve," Amorim told Sky Sports after Sunday's match. "Everywhere we need to improve in every aspect, build up, transition, decisions in the final third.
"Every player can improve, they are here because they showed something at other cubs. They have the quality, [but] we are still a team that plays on transition, we need to spend more time in final third to have more opportunities."
Unfortunately for Amorim, he knows that the status of Manchester United demands that improvements come quickly — even if that may be counterintuitive to the process he's trying to implement at the club.
"I'm not naive or crazy, I can see the moment we are in, I can look at the opponents and understand there is a big gap, but as a leader I cannot say we are going to take all of the time to close the gap," he said.
"Even if we bring in more players we have to hurry and show urgency to do better because we don't have much time at a club like this. We are in a rush."
