Leeds United arrived at Old Trafford just three points above the Premier League's relegation zone, but they left with a six-point cushion thanks to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Monday.

The visitors dazzled in the first half, with both of their goals coming inside the opening half hour from Noah Okafor. From then on it was about holding on against their shell-shocked hosts, who made things worse for themselves thanks to a Lisandro Martinez sending off in the 56th minute.

However, the red card to Martinez seemed to awaken the home side, and Man United cut the lead in half in the 69th minute thanks to a Casemiro header, leading to a barnstorming final 20 minutes as the Red Devils looked for an equalizer that never materialized.

Instead, Leeds celebrated a massive victory as they distanced themselves from the relegation fight — albeit just by a bit — and showed the kind of quality that should bode well for the remainder of the campaign.

"It's a massive result for us," Leeds forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin told Sky Sports. "We came here to win, that's how we set up.

"We executed the game plan and came away with three points. We're delighted."

Okafor, whose attacking outburst led the way for Leeds, praised his teammates for "fighting to the end" and pointed to the final moments of Monday's match as vital for securing the three points and boosting the team ahead of the closing weeks of the campaign.

"We knew the [Casemiro] goal was not at the right moment so we had another 20-30 minutes to survive," Okafor said. "We had to defend and attack as a team. We take this and we keep looking forward."

Both Calvert-Lewin and Okafor noted that there is still much left to do as Leeds look to secure their spot in the Premier League next season, which will require focus over the final six matches.

"It's important we don't read too much into the external noise and continue to focus on what's in front of us," Calvert-Lewin said.

"It's easy to come here and make history, but it doesn't matter come the end of the season when the points tallies are in. That's all we're focused on.

"One game after another, making sure that we stay in the Premier League."
