Two games into his new role as Manchester United head coach and things couldn't have gone better for Michael Carrick.

A win over Manchester City in the derby was the perfect way to start for the former midfielder, but he followed that by inflicting league leaders Arsenal with their first home defeat of the season and really throwing the title race into a spin.

Next up for United and Carrick is a home clash with Fulham, arguably a better judge of the impact the new man in charge has made in a game that's not against a traditional rival.

If he can carry on the momentum from the previous two results, Carrick will continue to state his claim for the post on a permanent basis, a role Teddy Sheringham is already backing him for.

The United treble winner exclusively spoke to DAZN News, thanks to Mr Q, and he's over the moon at the start that the new man at Old Trafford has made.

"I’m delighted for Michael [Carrick], " Sheringham said.

"I think he’s got the right character to go in there and do some good. He understands the football club, he knows the club’s traditions, and he knows what the supporters want and how they want the game to be played, so I think it’s a great acquisition.

"It’s obviously very early days at the moment, but I think he did an outstanding job up at Middlesbrough. Obviously, he came unstuck at the end, but he’s having his apprenticeship now, and I like his manner going into Manchester United. But again, it’s very early days"

With only Premier League football to concentrate on, there is plenty of time over the rest of the season for Carrick and his coaching staff to apply their methods to this United team and put themselves in pole position this summer.

Carrick has the chance to put his name ahead of some of the other candidates linked to the job, and Sheringham believes his old club need to take this time to really think about their next appointment.

"They’ve got six months to think about it," he added.

"I know that Thomas Tuchel’s name has been mentioned amongst others, but if he goes to the World Cup and doesn’t perform with England, then people will say, “Well, if you can’t do it for England, why would we want him for Manchester United?”
