Premier League 2025-26: the 10 moments that defined the season

The 2025-26 Premier League season has been a standout one for so many reasons, with broken records, managerial departures and shock results defining a memorable campaign.

A new name has been etched on the trophy, promoted sides upset the applecart and the unlikeliest of teams qualified for Europe.

There have also been some emotional departures, with Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Casemiro and Mohamed Salah playing their final minutes for their respective clubs.

Here, DAZN News looks back at the 10 moments that defined what has been an incredible top-flight season.

Ange Postecoglou sacked by Nottingham Forest after 39 days

It feels like a lifetime ago, but one of the most controversial moments of the season came in October when Ange Postecoglou was sacked after just eight games at the helm of Nottingham Forest.

The Australian was a surprise appointment after owner Evangelos Marinakis ousted Nuno Espirito Santo following a very public falling out, but Big Ange failed to register a single win before being dismissed.

Enzo Maresca leaves Chelsea on New Year's Day

Chelsea enjoyed an encouraging start to the season following their statement FIFA Club World Cup triumph in the United States, but then the wheels truly came off.

In mid-December, Enzo Maresca surprised everyone by going on an extraordinary rant in a press conference following a 2-0 victory over Everton, and then he left Stamford Bridge with the club in fifth on New Year's Day.

The Italian has been heavily linked with replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City this summer, and if he does take the reins at the Etihad, then his outburst will all make sense.

Michael Carrick's Manchester United humbles Manchester City

If Michael Carrick wanted a soft launch for his role of caretaker manager at Manchester United, then he was not going to get it, as first up was the visit of rivals Man City to Old Trafford.

However, the Red Devils produced their performance of the season under Carrick, cutting through Pep Guardiola's side like a hot knife through butter and waltzing to a 2-0 win.

Mohamed Salah announces Liverpool exit

At the end of March, Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah announced that he would be leaving Anfield after nine years, cementing himself in the club's illustrious history.

The Egyptian King is widely regarded as one of the Reds' greatest players of the modern era and leaves Merseyside with three Premier League trophies, a Champions League title, an FA Cup and two League Cups, having totalled 257 goals in 442 appearances.

Tottenham appoint Roberto De Zerbi

Tottenham were destined for relegation under caretaker manager Igor Tudor, but they saved their Premier League status by appointing Roberto De Zerbi with seven games to spare.

While his tenure started with a defeat to Sunderland, he managed to take 11 points from a possible 21, with a final-day victory over Everton relegating London rivals West Ham.

Bournemouth beat Man City to gift Arsenal Premier League title

Despite defeating Arsenal in what was viewed as a defining encounter, it was City's fixtures that looked the more menacing, with trips to Everton and Bournemouth appearing particularly difficult.

After dropping points to the Toffees, Pep's side were only able to salvage a point at the Vitality Stadium, meaning the title was Arsenal's for the first time in 22 years, cue wild celebrations at the Emirates.

Pep Guardiola announces Man City departure

We all knew it was coming, but just two days before the final day of the season and after months of speculation, Guardiola announced he would be leaving Man City after 10 years in charge.

The Spaniard will forever go down as one of the greatest managers to ever grace the sport, having won 20 major trophies and transformed the English game, and he was an emotional wreck when he waved goodbye to the club he holds so dear.

Bruno Fernandes breaks Premier League assists record

Heading into the final day, Bruno Fernandes had already equalled Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne's assist record and was subsequently named Premier League Player of the Season.

It took the Portuguese 32 minutes to bag his 21st assist of the campaign, setting up Patrick Dorgu to put the Red Devils 1-0 up against Brighton and breaking the record in the process.

West Ham relegated to the Championship

While it went to the final day, West Ham would need a miracle to avoid relegation, and they did not get it as, despite defeating Leeds United 3-0, Spurs were also victorious over Everton, thus relegating the Hammers to the Championship.

Poor recruitment and managerial appointments set the Hammers on their way to the second tier, and despite an upturn in form under Nuno, it was too little too late for the Irons, who will be playing in the second tier for the first time since 2012.

Sunderland reach Europe for first time in 52 years

Another final day moment rounds off the 10 defining moments of the season as Sunderland defeated Chelsea 2-1 to qualify for the Europa League, having gone 52 years without playing European football.

Regis Le Bris' side needed results to go their way, and they did with Brighton beaten and Brentford only managing a draw, as the Wearsiders capped off the most extraordinary season after winning the Championship play-offs just a year ago.
