Premier League preview: Who will take the last relegation place on the final day on the season?

The final round of the Premier League season takes place on Sunday and will see either West Ham United or Tottenham Hotspur relegated.

Champions League places are also up for grabs as Bournemouth look to seal sixth spot and a potential place in European football’s premier competition.

Here are all the big talking points heading into Matchday 38.

Capital punishment – but for who?

The equation is quite simple for Tottenham and West Ham this weekend.

Victory for Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs at home to Everton would keep them up and relegate the Hammers, but realistically a point would suffice.

Spurs have a far superior goal difference to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side and currently lie two points above them.

The only way West Ham can survive is if Tottenham lose to the Toffees and they beat Leeds United at home.

Should that happen, Nuno’s men would finish a point above Spurs and send their London rivals down.

Champions League places up for grabs

Bournemouth, Brighton and Liverpool remain in contention to qualify for the Champions League after Aston Villa’s win in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.

By winning the Europa League, Villa have now secured qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Yet their result against Manchester City this Sunday will have a major impact on the remaining European places in the Premier League.

England have been given an extra Champions League place for next season due to the strong performances of Premier League clubs in UEFA competitions this season.

The Elite Performance Spot (EPS) is applied after all other forms of qualification, meaning that Villa would need to finish fifth in order for the extra Champions League place to be given to the team who finishes sixth.

Villa currently sit fourth in the Premier League and are three points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool.

Unai Emery’s side will finish fifth in the Premier League if they lose away to Manchester City and Liverpool win at home to Brentford on Sunday to secure fourth place.

If Villa finish fourth by avoiding a defeat to City, either Bournemouth or Liverpool will secure the fifth and final Champions League spot.

Fond farewells

Raw emotion will drip from every corner of the Etihad Stadium when Manchester City host Aston Villa in Pep Guardiola’s final game in charge.

The legendary Spaniard has spent 10 seasons in charge, winning 20 trophies, but will call time on his tenure after this weekend.

City supporters will pay a stirring tribute to a man seen by many as the greatest manager in Premier League history.

Just down the M62 on Merseyside, Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah will bid farewell to Anfield in what could be his final appearance for the club.

However, Slot would not be drawn on whether the Egypt international will be involved in his final-ever game at Anfield.

“I never say anything about team selection, so it would be a surprise if I did that right now,” he said.

Whether he plays or not remains to be seen, but this will be a day when Salah will say goodbye to the club where he has established himself as one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players.
